Definitely interested in going, thanks in part to reading this months ago. I'm linking to it in my weekly Book End post to share with other Hawaii readers. To answer your question, it's yes...Hey Alison!

To answer your question, it's yes and no. Often, by the time a book gets to the readers, even as ARCs, it has already gone to print, which makes it much more difficult to make changes and can be very costly. However, covers are looked at by the author, booksellers, reps, as well as our marketing, publicity, editorial and art departments. All of these different people way in on the final cover. Needless to say, it is a thorough process.

If you get an ARC and have an opinion as a reviewer and reader, I wouldn't discourage you from contacting the publisher. In some cases, as we have seen recently online, book bloggers can carry a lot of weight and publishers have changed covers due to a large negative response from readers. Bottom line, it doesn't always elicit a change, but it can, so feel free to contact publishers with constructive feedback.Peachtree Publishershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09570381618922079906noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1211093528215805091.post-22770469520456775452010-03-15T14:15:24.800-04:002010-03-15T14:15:24.800-04:00Great interview! I love seeing the progression towards the final cover!

When an ARC is sent out with a cover, do the readers' opinions of the cover matter?

I'm only asking because I recently read an ARC of a YA book, and the cover gave a very different expectation of what the book was going to be about. I'm no graphic artist, but I would have changed a few things. Is this feedback the publisher/marketing team wants or should I keep my reviews focused on content?Alison's Book Markshttp://www.alisonsbookmarks.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1211093528215805091.post-88988407201280813242010-03-15T14:14:15.647-04:002010-03-15T14:14:15.647-04:00Excellent post about the stages of cover designExcellent post about the stages of cover designMelnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1211093528215805091.post-2834844187920328402010-03-15T13:58:03.977-04:002010-03-15T13:58:03.977-04:00It's great to take a look behind the scenes on...It's great to take a look behind the scenes on how book covers come to be. The trip (for readers) from seeing an ARC to the finished product is varied at times as well. I'll see one version online, one in my hands, and one on the shelf and be left gauging my reaction to each. More often than not, the final one becomes my favorite, but there are those occasions where the one or two prior just seem to fit a little bit better. I definitely agree with the "should make a single statement" the book bit. It can be distraction when you see one thing, expect something along the lines of it, and then the book had absolutely nothing to do with the cover.
